The Campaign for Exceptional Care
Stephens Memorial Hospital has been a key provider of compassionate and high-quality health care in western Maine since 1957. In our nearly half century of service, we have been guided by one constant goal: To respond to the health needs of the people of western Maine with an outstanding level of medical care.
Thanks to a first-rate medical staff that chooses to practice at Stephens Memorial Hospital because it offers high-quality medicine in a beautiful rural setting, we are successfully meeting this goal. Indeed, it is because of our success—and an accompanying steep rise in demand for hospital services—that we have had to upgrade several key hospital facilities, including:
- Construction of a new,
patient-friendly, state-of-the-art Emergency Services
- Expansion of surgical
services and the addition of a new, first- floor
endoscopy and minor procedures suite
- Reconfiguration and expansion
of Imaging Services, including a new Women's Imaging
- Construction of a Chapel and a renovation of the Coffee & Gift Shop
These improved facilities will ensure that those areas of the hospital most heavily used by outpatients and where acute illnesses are most frequently diagnosed and treated, are as contemporary, comfortable and convenient as possible. The expanded new facilities will also help us greatly as we continue to attract and recruit the best physicians and staff to our area.
The hospital's total estimated cost to complete this project was $7 million. A capital campaign, the Campaign for Exceptional Care, approved by MaineHealth, Western Maine Health and Stephens Memorial Hospital boards, has raised over $8.8 million from community leaders, corporations and businesses, foundations and from the residents in the communities we serve.
Stephens Memorial Hospital trustees have also endorsed a plan to assertively build a stronger endowment fund and will strive to boost the endowment from its current market value of approximately $2.5 million to well over $5 million. Gifts to help build the endowment will be sought in the form of life-income and deferred gifts, including bequests, annuities, remainder and lead trusts, gifts of real estate and life insurance. A stronger endowment will also ensure that we can continue to offer outreach and community health programs for all in our region.
The leaders at Stephens Memorial Hospital believe that this capital campaign, combined with a growing endowment and a strong annual giving program will help keep our community hospital advancing forward.
