The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute

Inpatient Cancer Care

Overview
Maine Medical Center has two dedicated units for people with cancer who require hospitalization: the Marshall L. and Susan Gibson Pavilion for adult patients and The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital for children.
Adults receive compassionate, quality care in the Gibson Pavilion, the only dedicated inpatient oncology unit of its size in Maine. The 44-bed Gibson Pavilion has an outstanding reputation for the caliber of its nursing staff as well as a range of services and amenities tailored to the special needs of patients diagnosed with cancer and their families.

Children receive specialized care at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, the state's only children's hospital. A hospital within a hospital, this upbeat and family-focused setting is staffed by professionals who recognize that children are not simply small adults. The care team provides outstanding clinical and support resources tailored to the unique needs of pediatric patients.

Patients diagnosed with cancer also may be treated in specific units that have a particular expertise in selected disease sites, such as tumors of the brain or liver.

The Marshall L. and Susan Gibson Pavilion

The Gibson Pavilion is staffed by oncology-certified nurses who meet rigorous national standards of training and expertise in cancer care. They not only have in-depth understanding of the clinical aspects of oncology care, but also a wide knowledge of social and community resources, support groups, laws protecting patients diagnosed with cancer, reimbursement and many other issues relating to the care of patients with cancer.

MMC also is the first acute-care hospital in Maine to earn MagnetTM designation, the highest honor an organization can receive for the quality of its nursing care.

Family-centered, compassionate care
Just as important as the clinical expertise of MMC Cancer Institute's oncology nurses is their attention to the emotional and psychosocial needs of each patient and his or her family. Regardless of where patients are in their cancer journey, MMC Cancer Institute's nurses are beside them every step of the way with respect, compassion and support.
Family-centered care is a hallmark of the Gibson Pavilion. The staff understands that families need to be together during this challenging time, and that the family is a vital part of the care team.

A facility designed for patient and family comfort
When a patient is facing cancer, the care environment is vitally important. This gracious facility has been designed to be a comfortable, uplifting place that promotes healing and a sense of well-being. It offers thoughtful amenities such as:

  • Spacious, mostly private rooms with ample seating for visiting family and friends
  • Special rooms for acutely ill patients that ensure the necessary isolation without sacrificing aesthetics or comfort
  • A room service menu that gives patients the flexibility to eat what they want with a wide variety of food choices

Extensive support resources
The Gibson Pavilion staff makes every effort to help patients and family members take advantage of the support resources available to them:

  • The MaineHealth Learning Resource Center provides literature about support groups and other community-based resources throughout Maine, as well as a computer with Internet access so patients and families can stay in touch via e-mail.
  • A dedicated oncology social worker is also available to help connect patients and family members to outside resources through such organizations as the American Cancer Society, the Cancer Community Center and others.
