Assignments generally require a regular commitment of 4 hours per week for a minimum of six months.
Duties performed include greeting and escorting patients to their floors, providing routine information to visitors, giving directions, and assisting staff with clerical duties.

AMBULATORY SURGICAL UNIT
Volunteers assist patients coming for day surgery with paperwork, answer questions and provide general assistance to patients' families in the waiting room.
Monday-Friday: 8:00am-12, 12-4pm, 4-7pm
Several times a week, volunteers supply the many waiting rooms with magazines. The book cart can be circulated throughout the hospital offering reading materials to patients, along with playing cards and puzzles.
Monday-Friday: 2-4 hours am or pm
The Boutique is a specialty shop provided by the Women's Board of the Maine General Hospital to serve the needs of patients, families, visitors and hospital staff of the Women and Infants Center. Among the items carried are lactation items and supplies, NICU items, infant clothing, books and videos, nursing attire and accessories, car seats, gifts, toiletries and stationery. Volunteers assist with sales, fit nursing bras, stock items and keep the shop neat and clean.
Daily: 9am-1pm, 1-5pm, flexible
CHILD LIFE CENTER
Children who must spend time at Maine Medical Center find volunteer friends who read, play games and help make their stay as pleasant as possible. Volunteers help staff the playroom on the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital Inpatient Unit.
Monday-Friday: 8:30-11:30am, 1-4pm, 6-8:00pm
Saturday, Sunday: 8:30-11:30am, 1-4pm
The role of the Escort is to provide wheelchair assistance or an escort for inpatients, outpatients and visitors entering the hospital, working closely with our vounteers and customer service reps at the South Entrance, Main Lobby, Connector and Emergency Information Desks.
Daily: 8am-12pm, 12-4pm, 4-8pm
Volunteers have the opportunity to assist customers, prepare flowers and price merchandise, deliver arrangements to patients and employees and help keep the shop neat and clean. Volunteers with an interest may have an opportunity to make flower arrangements.
Monday-Friday: 9am-12:30pm, 12:30-4:30pm
Magazines, cards, candy and gift items are sold in the Gift Shop. Volunteers assist with sales, stock items and keep shop neat and clean.

HOSPITAL ELDER LIFE PROGRAM (HELP)
Specially trained volunteers, supervised by interdisciplinary professionals, provide various services to hospital patients over the age of 70. Activities such as daily visits, help with meals, therapeutic activities to provide mental stimulation and socialization, exercise and help with walking, evening sleep enhancement activities such as backrubs are some of the services provided. Extensive training provided.
Daily: 3-4 hours weekly, morning, afternoon or evening
The four information desks are some of the most important volunteer assignments of Maine Medical Center. Hundreds of patients and visitors depend daily on the desk volunteers for accurate information and assistance. In addition, volunteers in this role create, by their attitude toward and reception of the public, an important first impression of the hospital. Volunteers work closely with the customer service reps.
Daily: 8am-12p, 12-4pm, 4-8pm
The Kiosk is run by the Pavilion Grill. Volunteers help make coffee, stock supplies, keep the area clean and assist customers.
MAINEHEALTH LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER-EAST TOWER
This health information center offers a lending library and health education classes to patients, families and community. The volunteers assist the Health Educators by performing clerical tasks and administrative support functions such as shelve books and videos, photocopying, filing, collating information, communicate with class participants via telephone, distribution of course catalogs and books throughout facility. Assist patients and families in obtaining or locating appropriate resources.
Monday-Friday: late afternoon-early evening
Volunteers provide various kinds of clerical assistance to the library, including typing, shelving, photocopying or compiling statistical reports.
Monday-Friday: generally a.m.
Individuals who enjoy the office environment and prefer working behind the scenes may enjoy assisting a hospital department with answering the phone, computer work, filing, assembling packets and other general office projects.
Monday-Friday: 8am-12pm, 12-4:00pm (varies by department)
Volunteers provide the comfort of companionship to cancer patients and their families.
Monday-Friday: 1-4pm, 6-8pm
Volunteers offer this area critical assistance by transporting patients for surgery, making trips to lab and Blood Bank and delivering schedules throughout the hospital. Intensive training required.
Monday-Friday: 7/8am-12pm, 12:00-3:30/4pm
Volunteers assist the staff either behind the counter taking and filling orders or in the dining area by assisting customers, cleaning tables and keeping the area neat and clean.
Monday-Friday: 8:30-11:30am, 11:30am-2pm, 2-4pm
SPECIAL CARE UNIT
Families coming to the Special Care Unit waiting room find assistance from volunteers who serve as resource people and as a liaison between SCU staff and patients' families.
Daily: 9am-12:30pm, 12:30-4pm, 4-8pm
SAFE PATIENT AND FAMILY CENTERED CARE
Maine Medical Center is asking patients and families to help us continue to improve the ways we deliver care. We believe the patient and family's own hospital experience is a driver for quality improvement. Volunteers participate on councils, communities and teams with staff throughout the hospital. There can be numerous volunteer opportunities serving patients and families.
