Maine Children's Cancer Program
Big Cancer Care Resources for the Littlest of Patients

The team at MCCP treats all types of childhood cancers, including:

Overview
The Maine Children's Cancer Program (MCCP) provides comprehensive treatment for children diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders. With four pediatric hematology/oncology physicians, a nurse practitioner, and a team of specialized nurses, social workers and research associates, MCCP offers a wealth of resources to young patients and their families in a caring and close-to-home setting. The majority of MCCP's nursing staff has achieved certification as a Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON), and the majority of the research associates are certified by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA).

In addition to the outstanding clinical expertise of its staff, MCCP has an exceptionally strong research program. It is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG) - the premier childhood cancer research organization with more than 2,000 physician-members worldwide. MCCP is actively involved in clinical research trials through COG which offer access to the latest and best therapies under investigation for children.

This is significant because treatment provided through clinical trials has increased the cure rate for childhood cancer from less than 10 percent in the 1950s to nearly 80 percent today. COG members submit their patients' diagnostic, treatment and follow-up data to a research data center and, because this data is collected from pediatric patients worldwide, results are obtained more rapidly - and new treatments can be developed hundreds of times faster.

As a COG member, MCCP is able to offer children in northern New England the same innovative treatments available at such renowned institutions as the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - but in a convenient, closer-to-home location.

Recognizing that a child's cancer diagnosis impacts the family on many levels, MCCP provides an extensive psychosocial support system to the entire family. It is championed by three pediatric oncology social workers with considerable experience in counseling children, siblings and parents, and providing age-appropriate guidance, compassion and hope.

And when children with cancer require hospitalization, family-focused inpatient care is provided at the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital within MMC - the only children's hospital in Maine.

Inpatient care for children with cancer
Inpatient care for children with cancer is provided at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, the state's only children's hospital. A hospital within a hospital, this upbeat and family-focused setting is staffed by professionals who recognize that children are not simply small adults, and they provide outstanding clinical and support resources tailored to the unique needs of pediatric patients.

Member of MCCP Staff Prefers...Treats?
MCCP has a special addition to their staff of talented caregivers: Daisy, a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle (a cross between a poodle and a Labrador retriever). Daisy spends her days visiting with children being treated at MCCP's outpatient clinic in Scarborough. This unique pet therapy program is the first to employ a full-time working dog in an outpatient oncology clinic.
