Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry From Dr. Girard Robinson, Chief of Psychiatry, Maine Medical Center and Chief Medical Officer, Spring Harbor Hospital
The Department of Psychiatry at Maine Medical Center has served our community since 1963. As we have continued to grow and diversify over the years, so has the scope of our mission of patient care, education and research.
Today, the Department of Psychiatry is part of a comprehensive system of care that is delivered not only at Maine Medical Center (MMC), Maine’s largest hospital, but also at Spring Harbor Hospital, a state-of-the-art 100-bed psychiatric hospital located in Westbrook, Maine, 4.5 miles from MMC. Our unique collaboration allows us to offer the most complete array of psychiatric treatment, physician-training, and medical-research programs north of Boston.
As a local, state, and regional leader in psychiatric care, the MMC Department of Psychiatry works with individuals, hospitals, and other organizations from across Maine and beyond to support the delivery and development of the highest quality inpatient and outpatient services for thousands of individuals experiencing mental illness and co-occurring disorders.
Our diverse and comprehensive array of services includes:
· Medical/Neuro- Psychiatry Inpatient Services
· Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry
· Emergency Psychiatry
· Child, Adult and Geriatric Outpatient Services
· Primary Care Integration
· Portland Identification and Early Intervention Program
Since 1971, our psychiatric services have provided a full spectrum of educational experiences, academic stimulation, and research opportunities for resident, fellow and medical student training. Our recent affiliation with the Tufts University School of Medicine also allows us to play a significant role in the psychiatric education of Tufts medical students who are enrolled in the Maine Track of the Tufts University School of Medicine.
In conjunction with the MaineHealth system’s development of an Accountable Care Organization (ACO), we are committed to ensuring our psychiatric services are patient-centered, accountable and cost effective. We are actively engaged with community-based mental health programs within the Maine Mental Health Partners our regional mental health system to coordinate high quality care that will best meet the needs of our patients and the community. The integration of mental health services into the primary care and specialty care settings support the development of Patient Centered Medical Homes which we will significantly improve the experience of our patients, improve the delivery of care, and reduce costs. As part of Maine’s premier health care system, we are committed to building partnerships and enhancing the communication and coordination between medical and mental healthcare so that our patients will receive affordable, accessible, high quality psychiatric care.
