Pediatric Residency

Note From the Chairs

The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center provides comprehensive, family-centered healthcare for the children of Maine and northern New England. Key activities of The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital include:

  • collaborative delivery of integrated healthcare services to children;
  • promotion of children's health;
  • education of caregivers in the principles and practices of healthcare for children;
  • advancement of the knowledge and the care of children through clinical research;
  • treatment of complex medical and surgical diseases in a tertiary care facility.

The Residency Program at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital is designed to provide a progressive educational experience with increasing patient care and supervisory responsibility. At the end of the three-year program, graduates are prepared to successfully complete the certification examination of the American Board of Pediatrics and enter the career pathway of their choice.

The faculty includes over 130 board-certified physicians. Other health professionals actively participate in the training of students and residents. Fulltime general pediatric faculty oversee ambulatory, inpatient, newborn, and international health services as well as a school-based health program, outcomes research, and other community health services. These services are complemented by a full range of pediatric medical and surgical specialties, which provide high quality programs for the children in the region.

Faculty are actively involved in multi-center pediatric quality improvement including NICHQ, pediatric hospital medicine, cystic fibrosis care, inflammatory bowel disease care (IBD Improve Care Now), and neonatal care (Vermont Oxford Network). The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital is also a leader in community-based quality improvement efforts focused on childhood overweight and childhood asthma.

Many faculty practices are adjacent to the hospital so that meaningful interchange between faculty and residents is the rule. When you admit patients at night, our attending physicians come in to supervise and teach. General pediatricians' offices are available to you for continuity practice and month-long blocks in community pediatrics. In our program, you will see faculty and house staff in partnership for excellence in patient care and pediatric training.  Be sure to check out our hospital website at www.bbch.org to see more details about The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
