Maine Medical Center fills a dual role, as both a community hospital and a tertiary care center. The high quality care, advanced technology, and well-trained professionals at MMC have made it the major referral center north of Boston. At the same time, MMC also delivers excellent routine medical and surgical care to its community.
As a single-hospital sponsor, MMC currently supports over 200 residents and fellows in 10 residencies and 8 fellowships approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Each program is the responsibility of a full-time program director and more than 500 highly qualified attending physicians serve as faculty. House officers benefit from the close personal and professional relationships that they develop with members of the attending staff. Clinical practice is supported by an excellent nursing and allied health professional staff and a highly skilled ancillary staff.
Residents also have the opportunity to work in office settings at a clinic in Cape Elizabeth and our primary care facility in Falmouth.
The clinical experience is complemented by basic science seminars, daily teaching rounds, and a large number of clinical conferences in all specialties and subspecialties. House officers regularly participate in major continuing education offerings sponsored outside the hospital. Furthermore, the hospital supports attendance of each house officer beyond the first year of training at a major medical education conference sponsored by another institution in another city.
Research is an essential activity at a teaching hospital, today more than ever. Where once it took decades for new knowledge to find its way to practical application at the bedside, now the interval is measured in years and sometimes only in months. Residents have numerous opportunities to pursue areas of interest.
