The Southern Maine Wellness Council

The Southern Maine Wellness Council was developed in the mid 1980s by the United Way of Greater Portland, via a UNUM community grant, as a membership based organization. It thrived through the 80s and 90s and was eventually merged with the Lifeline Center for Wellness and Health Promotion at the University of Southern Maine in 1995. After 14 years of activities at USM, the council relocated to Maine Medical Center in late 2009. In 2010 we formed a collaborative with the Wellness Council of Maine to share resources and cross market trainings and activities.

The wellness council is your regional center for acquiring the latest wellness related knowledge, information, training and resources to help your organization build successful wellness programs. We are here to support your efforts to control health care costs and enhance employee health status and productivity.

Purpose and Objectives

The primary purpose of the Southern Maine Wellness Council is to provide advocacy, leadership and support for employers, engage in employee wellness activities via networking, resource sharing and continuing education.

Council objectives include:

  • To provide program services based on the unique needs of individual organizations
  • To support the development and/or expansion of area worksite programs
  • To provide forums for resource exchange and professional networking opportunities

Testimonial

The Southern Maine Wellness Council is a dynamic organization and a valuable resource to the southern and mid-Maine business community. Their events are well planned and offer information that is presented clearly, often from the perspective of our counterparts at other companies. As an HR professional, I find that I always take away practical wellness tools and ideas that I can readily apply from every event I attend.

I especially appreciate the opportunity to share ideas and learn from my fellow HR colleagues who face the same wellness challenges as I do. I feel strongly that SMWC has helped me do a better job with wellness at the Dingley Press and would encourage anyone associated with workplace wellness to join and attend. Bring your boss, too, and show him/her that making healthy choice is not just good for employees, but beneficial for the company as well.
